Are you listening?

You pray, you read, you wait—and nothing happens. The silence feels less like a peaceful pause and more like an empty room. If you are in that space right now, know this: God’s silence never means His absence. When you struggle to hear His voice, it isn't because He has stopped caring. Often, it is either because you or talking too much to listen, or the noise of distraction is too loud for you to hear.
God will never leave you although at times you may feel like it. Sometimes, God will get quiet to see what you are going to do when you think He is no longer there. Will you remain steadfast like Job. Or will you start to act like those fresh out of Egypt and complain the entire time you think that He is no longer there. What do you do when you feel all alone in the wilderness portion of your life? When you feel abandoned? When you start to think you have been turned over to a reprobate mind? Well, you get quiet and still in the storms of your life. You start to see your wilderness as resource and not
just a bunch of trees and wild animals. You must remember God often whispers before He screams.
1. Check Your Expectations
We often miss God's voice because we are looking for a spectacular sign or an audible shout.
The Gentle Whisper: In 1 Kings 19:11-12, God wasn't in the wind, the earthquake, or the fire. He was in a "gentle whisper".
Unconventional Channels: God frequently speaks through the beauty of nature, the wisdom of trusted friends, or shifting life circumstances.
Adjust Your Radar: If you are waiting for a booming voice, you might be missing the quiet, steady nudges He is already placing in your heart.
2. Look to What He Has Already Said
When you feel like God isn't speaking new words to you, look at the words He has already written.
The Bible is the most concrete way God reveals His character and His will. If you haven't opened Scripture recently, start there. His Holy Spirit brings the written word to life, activating it to comfort, correct, and guide you right where you are.
3. Clear the Static
Sometimes, the issue isn't that God has gone quiet, but that our lives have become too loud.
The Noise of Busyness: Running on empty and rushing through life drowns out spiritual sensitivity.
The Weight of Distraction: Constant digital noise, entertainment, and anxiety act as spiritual static.
Unconfessed Spaces: Sometimes, holding onto a habit or an attitude we know we need to surrender can create a sense of distance.
Take a moment to slow down. Be completely honest with Him about your frustrations, and ask Him to help you make space to listen.
4. Trust What He is Doing in the Quiet
Silence is not wasted time. In human relationships, you don't need to talk constantly to enjoy someone's presence; intimacy is often built in quiet, shared moments.
When God feels silent, He is often developing your character, testing your faith, and teaching you to trust His heart even when you can’t track His hand. It forces us to lean on the gospel truth rather than our fluctuating emotions.
Keep Talking, Keep Listening
While you might not always hear God perfectly, He always hears you. As 1 John 5:14 reminds us, if we ask anything according to His will, He hears us.
If God seems silent right now, keep talking to Him. Tell Him your troubles, share your doubts, and invite trusted people into your life to bear this burden with you. The silence will not last forever. Trust that your Good Shepherd knows exactly where you are.
